Early Adolescence through Adolescence Education (Middle/Secondary Education)

Approximate ages 10 through 21, grades 6-12
Students who have successfully completed the professional sequence in Education from Lakeland University should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline he or she teaches and create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.
- Describe how children with broad ranges of abilities learn and how pupils differ in their approaches to learning.
- Demonstrate how pupils differ in their approaches to learning and adapt instructions to meet the diverse needs of pupils, including those with disabilities and exceptionalities.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology to encourage children’s development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
- Apply an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.
- Use effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
- Organize and plan systematic instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, pupils, the community, and curriculum goals.
- Use formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of pupils.
- Evaluate the effect of his or her choices and actions on pupils, parents, professionals in the learning community and others; and seek opportunities to grow professionally.
- Foster relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and wellbeing; and act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.
- Effectively integrate the principles of character education based on pro-social values and stimulate the examination and understanding of personal, social, and civic values.
- Integrate the central ingredients of critical thinking and use rational, evidence-based argument in the presentation of classroom materials.

Major/Professional Sequence
In addition to the Interdisciplinary Studies coursework (see below) required of all Lakeland University graduates, students seeking certification to teach at the Early Adolescence through Adolescence certification level must complete an approved major and the following professional sequence:
Interdisciplinary Studies for Early Adolescence through Adolescence Education (Middle/Secondary Education) Majors:
A. Fundamental Skills (Workshops)
Note: No more than six semester hours of Fundamental Skills courses may be applied toward the completion of a Lakeland degree. All courses, however, contribute to a student’s full- or part-time status.
B. Rhetoric Skills
C. Quantitative Skills
To complete this requirement, students must earn an ACT mathematics score of 24 or above or pass MAT 140 .
Note: Students completing MAT 140 with a grade of BC or higher will be exempted from the Praxis Core Mathematics Test.
Distributional Studies Requirements for Early Adolescence through Adolescence Education Majors (Grades 6-12):
Art, Music, and Theatre (ART, GDN, MUS, THE)
- Early Adolescence through Adolescence Education majors must complete 3 semester hours within this category.
History and Political Science (HIS, POL)
Literature and Writing (CRW, ENG, WRT) (Excluded courses: ENG 230 ; WRT 211 ; WRT 212 )
Mathematics (MAT) (Excluded courses: MAT 120 , MAT 140 , MAT 140W , prior courses: MAT 130, MAT 150)
Natural Sciences (BIO, CHM, PHY)
Social Sciences (ANT, CRJ, DVS, ECN, PSY, SOC)
- Early Adolescence through Adolescence Education majors must take EDU 230 /PSY 230 .
Early Adolescence through Adolescence Education majors must also take a minimum of three (3) semester hours from one of the following:
The Critical Thinking Core Sequence
A. Core I: Foundations of Critical Thinking
B. Core II: Exploring the Human Condition (topics below):
C. Core III: Shaping the Future (topics below)
Note: Most Lakeland students are required to complete all levels of the Critical Thinking Core Sequence. Intermediate and upper-level transfer students, however, are exempt from some Core requirements. Students entering with 30-74 semester hours in transfer credit must complete a Core II and a Core III course, while students entering with 75 or more semester hours in transfer are only required to complete a Core III course.
Teacher Certification
*Admission to a teacher certification program is a prerequisite for entry into these classes.
Students seeking certification at the Early Adolescence through Adolescence certification level must also complete a certifiable major in biology, broad field science, broad field social studies-history, chemistry, English, or history. With a major in any of the aforementioned subjects, a minor in English as a Second Language, psychology, or Spanish may be added. Depending upon the major, other minors are also possible.
