Counseling Post-master’s Certificates

For professionals with a master’s degree in counseling interested in seeking additional licensure in community or school counseling and certification in higher education counseling.

Graduate counseling certificate programs are designed for individuals who have a master’s degree in counseling from Lakeland College or the equivalent from another accredited institution, and who are interested in acquiring additional knowledge and skills leading to licensure in Community Counseling or School Counseling and certification in Higher Education Counseling.

Graduate coursework in counseling from an earned master’s degree may satisfy requirements where appropriate. To be considered, coursework must parallel current course requirements in the M.A.C. program, be earned within the last seven years, and be assessed at a “B-” or better. Additional coursework between 12-18 credits may be required for each certificate program depending on the background of the individual and the intended emphasis. Fulfillment of at least all clinical experiences is required to complete a certificate program. See specific descriptions and course work requirements for each program on the department website in addition to contacting a Lakeland Admission Advisor at one of our seven centers across Wisconsin. Pursuing a certificate that leads to licensure may have additional requirements.

In order to be considered for entry into the program candidates must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative graduate GPA and are subject to the following requirements:

Meet all M.A.C. program admission requirements including, application fees, paperwork and one on-site meeting.
Complete a Lakeland College Certified Background Check prior to Internship I
Provide official transcript of prior graduate degree
Provide two letters of reference
Provide a current resume
Complete the online Evening Weekend and Online application.

Admissions decisions are made by the Director of the Master of Arts in Counseling Program. Upon being admitted students seeking a certificate will be assigned a M.A.C. advisor. The certificate programs are designed as supplements to the original master’s degree in counseling.

Community Counseling Certificate

Lakeland College has been approved by the Department of Safety and Professional Services as a post-secondary institution whose Community Counseling Program meets the educational requirements necessary to obtain a Licensed Professional Counselor-Initial Training (LPC-IT) license. In addition to meeting the Community Counseling course requirements, students are required to take these additional courses as listed below. For students who do not meet all the required courses in the Community Counseling program, additional course work will be required.

School Counseling Certficate

Lakeland College’s School Counseling Program is approved through the Department of Public Instruction and qualifies graduate students to obtain the Initial Educator license as a K-12 professional school counselor. In addition to meeting the School Counseling course requirements, students are required to take these additional courses as listed below. In addition to the below course work, students pursuing School Counseling certification are required to pass the Praxis II exam and complete a School Counseling Portfolio. For students who do not meet all the required courses in the School Counseling program, additional course work will be required.

Higher Education Certificate

Lakeland College’s Higher Education Counseling Program is designed for individuals interested in acquiring additional knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively in a post-secondary education setting. Students certified in higher education counseling seek careers in residence life, admissions, financial aid, career services, advising, and working with special populations. These careers may lead to other administrative positions on college or university campuses. In addition to meeting the Higher Education Counseling course requirements, students are required to take these additional courses as listed below. For students who do not meet all the required courses in the Higher Education Counseling program, additional course work will be required.
