Students who have successfully completed the M.Ed. degree from Lakeland University should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of educational policy and pedagogy or the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the subject area(s) s/he teaches.

  • Conduct an original research study that contributes new understandings about schools, students, and teachers.

  • Communicate effectively using both oral and written language.

  • Act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner.

Admission Requirements for the M.Ed.

(In addition to those listed under General Admission Requirements):

Applicants must have evidence of one of these additional requirements:

  • A valid teaching license.
  • Approval from the Director of the Center for Teacher Excellence and successful completion of foundation courses in educational psychology, human growth and development, the exceptional person, and majority-minority relations.

Qualified Admit Policy

  • Students who do not meet the stated admission requirements but whose academic records reveal significant potential for academic success, may be accepted as a Qualified Admit to Lakeland University by the Director of the Center for Teacher Excellence.
  • An applicant who does not possess a valid teaching license may be accepted as a Qualified Admit to Lakeland University via the same process with the following additions:
  • The applicant must first pursue a non-degree seeking undergraduate admission and successfully complete undergraduate courses in educational psychology, human growth and development, the exceptional person, and majority-minority relations.
    • These courses must be completed within two semesters.
  • Upon completion of these four courses, the student will enter as a qualified admit to the M.Ed. program.

Students considered and approved as a qualified admit to the M.Ed. must:

  • Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher upon completion of the first six (6) semester hours of Lakeland University graduate coursework.

Upon successful completion of six (6) semester hours:

  • Students are then fully admitted to Lakeland University.
  • Students who do not yet meet all criteria may be placed on probation, suspension or denied full admission.
    • Note: Students who have not yet completed six (6) semester hours continue with their qualified admit status and enrolment is limited to the amount of semester hours remaining up to six (6).

An Exception to the Policy Regarding Enrollment Prior to Admission

A student who wishes to enroll in M.Ed. courses which have been designed primarily for professional development is not required to make a formal application for admission. These students may register and enroll in any courses provided they meet the program and course requirements.
