Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in Music Education from Lakeland University should be able to:
- Perform to an appropriate level of mastery, either in voice or instrument.
- Lead an ensemble effectively.
- Use the piano as a professional tool.
- Identify significant dates, composers, pieces, genres and styles in regard to music history.
- Use the theoretical language of music for the composition of and analysis of musical pieces.
- Teach music.
- Demonstrate behaviors and aptitudes for professional success.

Major Requirements (60 semester hours)
Music Education - Instrumental or Vocal/General K-12 Certification (46 semester hours)
Complete four (4) semester hours based upon primary teaching specialization:
OR Instrumental (Band/Orchestra)
Ensembles (7 semesters)
Students must participate in seven (7) semesters of major ensemble appropriate to their instrument/voice. Some semesters may be taken for 0 credit if the student has fulfilled required semester hours.
Applied Lessons (14 semester hours)
Students must enroll in applied lessons on the principal instrument/voice for seven (7) semesters, completing a total of fourteen (14) semester hours. Three semesters of principal instrument/voice must be at the 444/445 level.
Recital Requirement
Students must give one (1) recital, typically done in the junior or senior year. The student must be enrolled in MUS 463 during the term in which each recital will be given. Scheduling and programming will be done in consultation with the student’s applied teacher and recital committee.
Piano Proficiency Test
- Students must pass a piano proficiency test; the test is given at the conclusion of MUS 259 .
- If the exam is not passed at that time, the student must enroll in Applied Piano and retake the exam in a subsequent term.
Teacher Certification
To qualify for Early Childhood through Adolescence (grades K-12) teaching certification in Music, a student must complete the courses listed above, the Kindergarten through Grade 12 (K-12) Professional Sequence , and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) statutory requirements.
