Music Performance, B.A.


Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in Music Performance from Lakeland University should be able to:

  • Perform to an appropriate level of mastery, either in voice or instrument.
  • Lead an ensemble effectively.
  • Use the piano as a professional tool.
  • Identify significant dates, composers, pieces, genres and styles in regard to music history.
  • Use the theoretical language of music for the composition of and analysis of musical pieces.
  • Teach music.
  • Demonstrate behaviors and aptitudes for professional success.

Major Requirements (55 semester hours)


Ensembles (8 semesters)


Students must complete eight (8) semesters of major ensemble appropriate to their instrument/voice and participate in an appropriate ensemble each semester enrolled. Ensembles may be taken for 0 credit once required semester hours are fulfilled.

**MUS 258  may be repeated as ensemble credit for keyboard students.

Applied Lessons (16 semester hours)


Students must enroll in applied lessons on the principal instrument/voice for eight semesters completing a total of sixteen (16) semester hours. Four (4) semester hours of principal instrument/voice must be at the 444/445 level.

Recital Requirement


Students must give two (2) recitals, typically done in the junior and senior years. The student must be enrolled in MUS 463 - Recital (0 semester hours)  during the term in which each recital will be given. Scheduling and programming will be done in consultation with the student’s applied teacher and recital committee.

Piano Proficiency Test


Students must pass a piano proficiency test; the test is given at the conclusion of MUS 259 - Class Piano IV (2 semester hours) . If the exam is not passed at that time, the student must enroll in Applied Piano and retake the exam in a subsequent term.
