English Minor

The English Minor program prepares its students for careers in education, giving them an extensive knowledge of major writers and movements, and critical terms and techniques.

Students who have successfully completed a minor in English from Lakeland University should be able to:

Read critically and closely, analyzing how texts and language create and affect meaning and our understanding of the world.
Write convincing arguments that are logical, well supported, and professionally presented.
Communicate their ideas with others in ways that are clear, respectful, and evidence-driven.
Identify key literary techniques, figures, and movements across a diverse range of texts in English.

Minor Requirements (24 semester hours)

For Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence Education Certification (grades 1-8)

ENG 211 - Introduction to British Literature I
ENG 212 - Introduction to British Literature II
ENG 220 - Introduction to American Literature
ENG 370 - Shakespeare
WRT 300 - Advanced Composition (WI)
One additional English (ENG) course numbered at the 200-level
Two additional English (ENG) courses numbered at the 300-level or above (one of which must be at the 400-level). One of these courses must have an emphasis in American literature.

Note(s):

To qualify for Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence (grades 1-8) teaching certification in English, a student must complete the courses listed above, the Middle Childhood through Early Adolescence Education Major/Professional Sequence and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) statutory requirements.
