The Lakeland Master of Arts (M.A.) in Counseling degree is dedicated to preparing students for one of three areas of professional counseling:  Early Childhood through Adolescence School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or Higher Education Counseling and Student Affairs.

The M.A. in Counseling program with a clinical mental health counseling emphasis is a 60 semester hour program designed to meet the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) requirements leading to Wisconsin licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC). The M.A. in Counseling program with a school counseling emphasis is a 51 semester hour program that is approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and is approved for licensure and certification as a Wisconsin School Counselor. The M.A. in Counseling program with a higher education and student affairs emphasis is a 48 semester hour program that meets all the standards currently endorsed by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), and professional competencies endorsed by the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). Instructors in Lakeland’s M.A. in Counseling program assess not only the academic and performance skills of graduate students, but also the temperament and the professionalism of candidates as they work toward earning a M.A. in Counseling. An undergraduate degree in the behavioral sciences is not required.
