Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in Music from Lakeland University should be able to:

Perform to an appropriate level of mastery, either in voice or instrument.
Lead an ensemble effectively.
Use the piano as a professional tool.
Identify significant dates, composers, pieces, genres and styles regarding music history.
Use the theoretical language of music for the composition of and analysis of musical pieces.
Teach music.
Demonstrate behaviors and aptitudes for professional success.

Major Requirements (52-60 semester hours)

Musicianship Fundamentals (21 semester hours)

Ensemble Requirement (6 semesters)

Students must participate in six (6) semesters of ensembles to their instrument/voice. Ensembles may be taken for zero (0) semester hours once the required semester hours are fulfilled.

Applied Study (10 semester hours)

Students must complete five (5) semesters of private lessons at the numbered 200 or above, or complete MUS 249 - Class Piano III (2 semester hours) and MUS 259 - Class Piano IV (2 semester hours) plus three (3) semesters of private lessons.

Music Emphasis Area (15-23 semester hours)

Students must complete one of the following emphasis areas:

Business and Contemporary Music Emphasis

MUS 303 - Music Entrepreneurship (2 semester hours)
MUS 312 - Music History and Literature II (WI)
MUS 1XX Applied Guitar (1 semester hour)

OR MUS 1XX Applied Percussion (1 semester hour)

Composition and Songwriting Emphasis

MUS 480 - Special Topics in Music (i.e. songwriting, chamber music, film scoring)

Cooperative Education Emphasis

EXP 100 - Professional Protocol (1 semester hour)
EXP 301 - Work, Ethics, and the Good Life (1 semester hour)
MUS 390 - Cooperative Education Experience–Music (1-12 semester hours)
OR EXP 290 - Cooperative Education Experience I (1-12 semester hours)
OR EXP 392 - Cooperative Education Experience II (1-12 semester hours)
OR
EXP 395 - Cooperative Education Experience III (1-12 semester hours)
Students complete EXP 290, 392, and 395, in that order, for a cumulative amount of no more than twelve (12) semester hours across the three courses.
Each course may be completed only once.
Six (6) semester hours must be in MUS 390.

Musicology Emphasis
