Interdisciplinary Studies
The Interdisciplinary Studies Program comprises those parts of the curriculum required of all Lakeland graduates - the classes and course sequences that one must complete regardless of major. These common courses and requirements reflect Lakeland’s commitment to providing students (1) with the foundational skills they need to succeed in college and beyond, and (2) with experiences across a breadth of fields and areas of learning. Simply put, it represents the University’s and its faculty members’ dedication to our school’s liberal arts tradition.
To accomplish its goals, the Interdisciplinary Studies Program includes distinct kinds of coursework and sets of requirements:
- Developmental skills
- College Skills
- Rhetorical Skills
- Quantitative Skills
- Distributional Studies
Having a broad foundation of academic skills and experiences, the capacity to comprehend and make connections among diverse perspectives, and a willingness to build on that foundation throughout their lives – these are the central component of Lakeland’s educational philosophy, and they are beneficial to all college students. As such, the Interdisciplinary Studies Program’s requirements produce graduates who can:
- Express ideas clearly through oral, written, and nonverbal communication.
- Locate, evaluate, and ethically use information from diverse sources to make informed decisions.
- Work collaboratively with others; respect diverse perspectives and contribute effectively to achieve common goals.
- Demonstrate social responsibility and the impact of one’s actions on individuals, communities, and the environment.
- Engage in introspection to regulate emotions, thoughts, or behaviors to promote personal growth and well-being.
- Approach problems with an open mind and examine alternative viewpoints/instructions before developing a work plan/strategy.
- Exploring life goals and career aspirations relative to one’s values.
All Lakeland faculty are members of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program.
