Sport Management and Leadership, B.A.


Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in Sport Management and Leadership from Lakeland University should be able to:

  • Explain the major concepts in the functional areas of sport management, leadership, sport marketing, and facilities management.
  • Construct and present effective oral and written forms of professional communication.
  • Identify the key legal and ethical issues related to contemporary sport management conduct.
  • Identify guidelines relative to diversity and inclusion in the sport industry.
  • Demonstrate content knowledge as it pertains to the sport industry.
  • Demonstrate personal characteristics such as motivation, maturity, judgment, and adaptability as they pertain to the sport industry.

Nine (9) semester hours from the following:


Students must select and successfully complete one of the following emphases:


Students should complete three (3) total hours of Cooperative Education Experience. Students who complete the Cooperative Education Emphasis do not complete the SML 390 - Cooperative Education Experience–Sport Management and Leadership (1-12 semester hours)  course.

Athletic Administration (12 semester hours)


A student is not eligible to choose this emphasis if also completing a Management emphasis.

Cooperative Education (22-26 semester hours)


*Only available to Sport Management and Leadership majors

Hospitality Management (12-20 semester hours)


  • A student is not eligible to complete this emphasis if also completing a major in Hospitality Management.
  • A student may not earn both areas of emphasis if available to their major (or if selecting as an optional emphasis to add-on). It must be one or the other.
    • Hospitality Management or Restaurant Entrepreneurship

Nonprofit Management (12-13 semester hours)


Courses for this emphasis are typically scheduled online or in other course formats. 

Student Designed (12 semester hours)


  • Students may propose a twelve (12) semester-hour emphasis in an area of academic interest that complements their major in the J. Garland Schilcutt School of Business & Entrepreneurship
  • Students may fulfill the emphasis requirement by completing current courses offered by the College of Business and Science, courses offered in other College of Humanities and Education, cooperative design courses, or internship experiences that are relevant to an area of interest.

  • A student completing a major in Sport Management and Leadership is not eligible to earn a major in Business Administration or Management with a Sport Management or Management emphasis.
    • The student may complete a major in Business Administration or Management with a different emphasis.
  • A student is eligible to complete a Cooperative Education emphasis specific to Sport Management.
  • A student may not earn both areas of emphasis if available to their major (or if selecting as an optional emphasis to add-on). It must be one or the other.

    • Human Resource Learning and Development or Human Resource Management
