The curriculum in Spanish is designed to help students acquire basic communication skills in the Spanish language and develop an understanding of the diverse cultures of both Spain and Latin America. Students with no background in the language begin in the introductory courses, while those with sufficient prior training may start in one of the more advanced classes. Students who complete the intermediate level Spanish courses will have a thorough exposure to the fundamentals of the language as well as some acquaintance with Spanish and Latin American culture. Lakeland’s Spanish program also offers students an opportunity to combine a language minor with another area of study where knowledge of a foreign language is an asset or to use their coursework as an integral part of a liberal arts education.
Students are advised to speak with a member of the Spanish faculty or the Dean of the School of Humanities and Fine Arts for information regarding qualifying for advanced placement.
Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in Spanish from Lakeland University should be able to:
- Demonstrate appropriate skills in reading Spanish.
- Demonstrate command of written expression in Spanish.
- Demonstrate listening comprehension of spoken Spanish.
- Demonstrate competence speaking Spanish appropriately, including conversational skills.
- Illustrate Spanish history and culture, including daily living patterns, societal structures, institutions, value systems, and cultural practices.
- Analyze works of Spanish literature.
- Experience immersion in a Spanish program abroad, involving cultural comparisons and practice of the target language.
- Prepare to pass ACTFL oral proficiency exam with placement in Intermediate High category or better.
- Prepare to pass ACTFL written exam with placement in Intermediate High category or better.
- Demonstrate competence and abilities related to the specific Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) standards.
