Broad Field Social Studies

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Curriculum

Schools ask a great deal from their social studies teachers, especially at the secondary level. Often, these instructors need to be experts in psychology and sociology, history and government. Lakeland’s broad field social studies program prepares future teachers to succeed in a wide variety of classroom settings. Designed to be versatile and marketable, the broad field social studies program allows students to concentrate in history, yet provides a diverse set of experiences from all areas of the social sciences.

Students who have successfully completed the professional sequence in Education and a B.A. in Broad Field Social Studies from Lakeland University should be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency with central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines within the social sciences.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill with the content and methodologies of the disciplines identified within the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for the Social Studies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in teaching a broad set of social science disciplines to students between the ages of 10-21.
