The ability to pilot an airplane can provide career opportunities as well as feelings of personal fulfillment. Lakeland offers a variety of ground school courses and direct flight instruction that will enable students to qualify for pilot certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Courses combine the development of student knowledge, skills, and disposition toward effective practice as a pilot. Flight instruction takes place at the Sheboygan County Memorial Airport and includes fees beyond the cost of tuition. Students must obtain a medical certificate from a doctor who is an FAA-authorized medical examiner. Private and instrument certificates require a third-class medical; commercial certificates require a second-class medical.

Students who have successfully completed a minor in Aviation from Lakeland University should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of private pilot training elements as dictated by 14 CFR 61.103(e).
  • Demonstrate aircraft operation and standard operating procedures as required by the FAA Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of instrument rating training elements as dictated by 14 CFR 61.65(a)(7).
  • Demonstrate aircraft operation and standard operating procedures as required by the FAA Instrument Pilot Airman Certification Standards.
