Degree and Major/Minor/Emphasis Restrictions


Degree Restrictions

  • Same major/New Degree designation: Students may not earn a second degree if the degree designation of a previously earned major has changed since completion of that major.
    • Example: Earned a B.A. in Computer Science, is not eligible to return to earn a B.S. in Computer Science.
  • Major and Minor in Same Program: Students may not complete a major and minor from the same program.
  • Previously Earned Minor: Students can return to complete coursework to earn a major in a program in which they previously completed a minor.

Major/Minor/Emphasis Restrictions

ACCOUNTING Major:
  • A student completing a major in Accounting is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration.
  • Students completing a major in Accounting have the option of pursuing an emphasis to supplement their major coursework.
BIOCHEMISTRY Major:
  • A student completing a major in Biochemistry is not eligible to earn a major or minor in Biology or Chemistry.
  • A student completing a major in Biochemistry is not eligible to earn a minor in Science.
BIOLOGY Major:
  • A student completing a major in Biology is not eligible to earn a major in Biochemistry.
  • A student completing a major in Biology is not eligible to earn a minor in Science.
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Major:
  • A student completing a major in Business Administration with a Management emphasis is not eligible to complete a major in Sport Management and Leadership with an Athletic Administration emphasis. The student may complete a different emphasis.
  • Students pursuing two or more Business and Entrepreneurship majors requiring completion of an emphasis must select a separate emphasis area for each major. See restrictions in Business and Entrepreneurship: Emphasis Areas  and in individual programs.
  • Students are eligible to complete more than one emphasis for a single major.
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Business Administration is not eligible to earn a major in Accounting, Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Marketing, or Management Information Systems.
BUSINESS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP Emphasis Areas:
  • Athletic Administration: A student is not eligible to choose this emphasis if also completing a Management emphasis.
  • Business Economics: A student is not eligible to choose this emphasis if completing a minor in Economics.
  • Graphic Design: Courses are offered at Lakeland University’s main campus location only. Students must physically attend all classes at this location. A student is not eligible to choose this emphasis if completing a major in Graphic Design.
  • Healthcare Management: Main campus (traditional) students should note all courses are offered through the Evening, Weekend, and Online program for this emphasis.
  • Hospitality Management: A student is not eligible to add this emphasis to a major in Hospitality Management. However, the student may add this emphasis to other Business and Entrepreneurship majors.
  • Insurance: Main campus (traditional) students should note all courses are offered through the Evening, Weekend, and Online program for this emphasis.
  • Management: A student is not eligible to choose this emphasis if also completing an Athletic Administration emphasis.
  • Nonprofit Management: Main campus (traditional) students should note all courses are offered through the Evening, Weekend, and Online program for this emphasis.
  • Sport Management: A student is not eligible to choose this emphasis if completing a major in Sport Management and Leadership or a minor in Sport Management.
CHEMISTRY Major:
  • A student completing a major in Chemistry is not eligible to earn a major in Biochemistry.
  • A student completing a major in Chemistry is not eligible to earn a minor in Science.
COMMUNICATION Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Communication is not eligible to earn a minor in Writing.
COMPUTER SCIENCE Major:
  • A student completing a major in Computer Science is not eligible to earn a major in Management Information Systems.
COMPUTER SCIENCE Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Computer Science is not eligible to earn a major in Computer Science or Management Information Systems.
CREATIVE WRITING (B.F.A.) Major:
  • A student completing a major in Creative Writing (B.F.A.) is not eligible to earn a major or minor in Writing (B.A.).
ECONOMICS Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Economics is not eligible to choose the Business Economics emphasis in completion of a Business and Entrepreneurship major.
HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT Major:
  • A student completing a major in Hospitality Management is not eligible to earn a major in Business Administration with a Hospitality Management emphasis. 
  • A student completing a major in Hospitality Management is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration.
  • Students completing a major in Hospitality Management have the option of pursuing an emphasis (excluding Hospitality Management) to supplement their major coursework.
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS Major:
  • A student completing a major in Management Information Systems is not eligible to earn a major or minor in Computer Science.
  • A student completing a major in Management Information Systems is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration.
  • Students completing a major in Management Information Systems have the option of pursuing an emphasis to supplement their major coursework.
MARKETING Major:
  • A student completing a major in Marketing is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration.
  • Students pursuing two or more Business and Entrepreneurship majors requiring completion of an emphasis must select a separate emphasis area for each major. See restrictions in Business and Entrepreneurship: Emphasis Areas  and in individual programs.
  • Students are eligible to complete more than one emphasis for a single major.
SCIENCE Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Science is not eligible to earn a major in Biochemistry, Biology or Chemistry.
SPORT MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP Major:
  • A student completing a major in Sport Management and Leadership is not eligible to earn a major in Business Administration with a Sport Management emphasis. The student may complete a major in Business Administration with a different emphasis.
  • A student completing a major in Sport Management and Leadership with an Athletic Administration emphasis is not eligible to complete the Management emphasis for another Business and Entrepreneurship major. The student may complete a different emphasis.
