Social Studies Education (grades 4-12), B.A.

Students who have successfully completed the professional sequence in Education and a B.A. in Social Studies Education (grades 4-12) from Lakeland University should be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency with central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines within the social sciences.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill with the content and methodologies of the disciplines identified within the Wisconsin Standards for Social Studies.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in teaching a broad set of social science disciplines to students in grades 4-12.

Additional Requirements:


  • Nine (9) additional semester hours in history (HIS) numbered 200 or above, three (3) semester hours of which must be numbered 300 or above.
  • Nine (9) semester hours of electives from at least two (2) other social science disciplines - anthropology (ANT), economics (ECN), political science (POL), psychology (PSY), and sociology (SOC), excluding cross-listed education/psychology courses—six (6) of which must be numbered 300 or above.
  • Service learning/civic engagement project: Students must complete a service learning/civic engagement project in either HIS 250 /450 - History of the Civil Rights Movement  or HIS 362 - United States Women’s History  or HIS 372 - United States Ethnic History  or a comparable project approved by program faculty.

Teacher Certification:


To qualify for Social Studies Education (grades 4-12) Teacher Certification, a student must complete the courses listed above, the Middle & High School Education Professional Sequence, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) statutory requirements.
