Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in Music from Lakeland University should be able to:

Perform to an appropriate level of mastery, either in voice or instrument.
Lead an ensemble effectively.
Use the piano as a professional tool.
Identify significant dates, composers, pieces, genres and styles in regard to music history.
Use the theoretical language of music for the composition of and analysis of musical pieces.
Teach music.
Demonstrate behaviors and aptitudes for professional success.

Major Requirements (46 semester hours)

Musicianship Fundamentals (21 semester hours)

Ensemble Requirement (6 semesters)

Student must participate in six (6) semesters of ensembles to their instrument/voice. Ensembles may be taken for 0 credit if the student has fulfilled required semester hours.

Applied Study (10 semester hours)

Students must complete five (5) semesters of private lessons at the numbered 200 or above, or complete MUS 249 - Class Piano III (2 semester hours) and MUS 259 - Class Piano IV (2 semester hours) plus three (3) semesters of private lessons.

Music Emphasis Area (15 semester hours)

Students must complete one of the following emphasis areas:

MUS 311 - Music History and Literature I OR HIS 265 - History of Rock and Roll
MUS 312 - Music History and Literature II (WI)
MUS 351 - Conducting (2 semester hours)
MUS 382 - Orchestration and Arranging (1 semester hour)
MUS 463 - Recital (0 semester hours) *Student will organize a performance of original works
MUS 480 - Special Topics in Music (i.e. songwriting, chamber music, film scoring)

Musicology Emphasis

Complete six (6) semester hours from:

GEN 134 - Humanities I OR ART 263 - Art History I
GEN 135 - Humanities II OR ART 264 - Art History II
MUS 480 - Special Topics in Music (i.e. jazz, avantgarde, or ethnomusicology)
