Biochemistry, B.S.

Students who have successfully completed a B.S. in Biochemistry from Lakeland University should be able to:

Apply the principles of chemistry and biology to understand biological systems.
Interpret scientific data.
Develop plans for examining a biochemical question.
Communicate scientific findings—orally and in written form.
Prepare for professional networking.
Demonstrate an effective disposition toward scientific learning.

Major Requirements (58-61 semester hours)

And the completion of at least one of the following emphases:

Cellular Biochemistry Emphasis (23 semester hours)

18 semester hours from the following:

BIO 330 - Microbiology (4 semester hours)
BIO 331 - Fundamentals of Immunology
BIO 441 - Neurobiology (4 semester hours)
BIOC 301 - Developmental Biology
BIOC 357 - Bioinformatics
CHM 320 - Advanced Organic Chemistry (4 semester hours)
CHM 323 - Physical Chemistry
Three (3) additional biology (BIO) or chemistry (CHM) semester hours numbered 300 or above

Physical Biochemistry Emphasis (23 semester hours)

BIOC 353 - Cellular Biochemistry
CHM 323 - Physical Chemistry
CHM 476 - Scientific Analysis and Writing II (WI) (2 semester hours)
MAT 231 - Calculus I (4 semester hours)
MAT 242 - Calculus II (4 semester hours)
MAT 331 - Calculus III (4 semester hours)
Three (3) additional biology (BIO) or chemistry (CHM) semester hours numbered 300 or above

Pharmaceutical Biochemistry Emphasis (20 semester hours completed at Lakeland University)

Courses completed at Concordia University Wisconsin School of Pharmacy (CUWSOP) (32 semester hours):

Students complete required admission steps to be accepted into to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at CUWSOP.
Students must successfully complete the entire first year of the PharmD program
The pharmacy courses required from year one at CUWSOP transfer back as electives to Lakeland University.
The CUWSOP PharmD coursework then satisfies the remaining requirements to earn a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biochemistry and an emphasis in Pharmaceutical Biochemistry.

Notes:

A student completing a major in Biochemistry is not eligible to earn a major or minor in Biology or Chemistry.
A student completing a major in Biochemistry is not eligible to earn a minor in Science.
