Music Education, B.A.


Students who have successfully completed a B.A. in Music Education from Lakeland University should be able to:

  • Perform to an appropriate level of mastery, either in voice or instrument.
  • Lead an ensemble effectively.
  • Use the piano as a professional tool.
  • Identify significant dates, composers, pieces, genres and styles in regard to music history.
  • Use the theoretical language of music for the composition of and analysis of musical pieces.
  • Teach music.
  • Demonstrate behaviors and aptitudes for professional success.

Choose one based upon primary teaching emphasis (band = instrumental; chorus = vocal)

And a combination of eleven (11) semester hours in the following areas:


Recital Requirement


Students must give one recital, which may be done in the junior or senior year.

Piano Proficiency Test


Students must pass a piano proficiency test; the test is given at the conclusion of MUS 259 - Class Piano IV (2 semester hours) , otherwise an incomplete for MUS 259 Class Piano IV will be given and the student must retake the test at the beginning of the subsequent term.

Teacher Certification


To qualify for Early Childhood through Adolescence (grades K-12) teaching certification in Music, a student must complete the courses listed above, the Early Childhood through Adolescence Professional Sequence, and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s (DPI) statutory requirements.
