History is about life—the way people in the past made lives for themselves, the cultures they created, the political and social forces that shaped them, and how those forces continue to influence the world today.
History lends perspective to the educated mind, allowing students to understand the social, economic, political, intellectual, and religious structures that have shaped the modern world. History students are well-read, well-informed, and well-rounded. The History program encourages them to think critically and creatively about the past, to carry out careful research, to communicate clearly, and to construct good, evidence based arguments. Our graduates make ideal candidates in a variety of professional fields. Many of our students go on to be inspiring teachers, some pursue their interest in history in graduate school, and most take leading positions in the professional market place, in business, law, and government service.
