Video games comprise one of the most popular new media forms of the late 20th and early 21st century and present new and exciting opportunities for narrative expression. This course instructs students on how to interpret and appreciate video game narratives through the lens of literary analysis, while paying specific attention to the formal elements of video game settings, including visual and aural components. Students study video games notable for their narrative achievement and apply literary terms and reader response theory to the video games and students’ experience playing them.  Students will also read and respond to academic scholarship on video games.
