MU 634 - Modern Western Art Music

Semester Hours: 3
This course examines major trends in twentieth- and twenty-first century Western Art Music including jazz, atonality and serialism, mid-century symphonic music; popular music, concert music, and performance art since 1945. Music will be viewed, discussed, and analyzed through the lenses of place, politics, philosophy, and process. The impact of non-Western music, nationalism, censorship, and advances in technology will be examined to understand the shape of music from this period.
