Degree and Major/Minor/Emphasis Restrictions


Degree Restrictions

  • Same major/New Degree designation: Students are not eligible for a second degree if the degree designation of a previously earned major has changed since completion of major.
    • Example: Earned a B.A. in Computer Science, is not eligible to return to earn a B.S. in Computer Science.
  • Major, Minor or Emphasis in Same Program: Students may not complete a major, minor or emphasis in the same subject simultaneously. 
    • Example: Student with declared Major in Hospitality Management is not eligible to earn the emphasis in Hospitality Management of a degree where this emphasis is available.
  • Previously Earned Emphasis or Minor: Students can return to complete coursework to earn a major in a program in which they previously completed an emphasis or minor.

Major/Minor/Emphasis Restrictions

ACCOUNTING Major:
  • A student completing a major in Accounting may earn a major in Business Administration or Organizational Leadership and Development by completing and emphasis of study for each major.
  • A student who has previously earned their bachelor’s degree from Lakeland or other post-secondary institutions in Business Administration or Organizational Leadership and Development major is eligible to pursue earning a major in Accounting, provided a student meets Lakeland residency requirements of degree/major.
  • A student completing a major in Accounting is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration or Cooperative Education.
    • A student is not eligible to complete Cooperative Education emphasis requirements of other majors.
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Major:
  • A student completing a major in Business Administration is eligible to earn a major in Accounting or Organizational Leadership and Development by completing an emphasis for each major of study (one for business, one for oganizational leadership and development).
  • A student completing a major in Business Administration is not eligible to earn a minor in Cooperative Education or Marketing.
    • A student is not eligible to complete Cooperative Education emphasis requirements of other majors.
  • Students pursuing two or more Business majors requiring completion of an emphasis must select a separate emphasis area for each major, mindful of any emphasis restrictions.
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Business Administration is not eligible to earn a major in Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Marketing, Management Information Systems, or Organizational Leadership and Development.
  • A student completing a minor in Business Administration is not eligible to earn a minor in Marketing.
COMPUTER SCIENCE Major:
  • A student completing a major in Computer Science is not eligible to earn a major in Management Information Systems.
COMPUTER SCIENCE Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Computer Science is not eligible to earn a major in Management Information Systems.
COOPERATIVE EDUCATION Minor:
  • A student may not complete the Cooperative Education minor if a cooperative education emphasis or option is available in their selected major.
  • International students may not complete the Cooperative Education minor.
ECONOMICS Minor:
  • A student completing a minor in Economics is not eligible to choose the Business Economics emphasis in completion of a Business major.
FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY Major:
  • A student completing a major in Food Safety and Quality is not eligible to earn a minor in Cooperative Education.
    • A student is not eligible to complete Cooperative Education emphasis requirements of other majors.
HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT Major:
  • A student completing a major in Hospitality Management is not eligible to earn a major in Business Administration with a Hospitality Management or Management emphasis. The student may complete a major in Business Administration with a different emphasis.
  • A student completing a major in Hospitality Management is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration or Cooperative Education.
    • A student is not eligible to complete Cooperative Education emphasis requirements of other majors.
INDUSTRIAL SYSTEMS DATA ANALYTICS Major:
  • A student completing a major in Industrial Systems Data Analytics is not eligible to earn a minor in Computer Science.
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS Major:
  • A student completing a major in Management Information Systems is not eligible to earn a major or minor in Computer Science.
  • A student completing a major in Management Information Systems is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration.
MARKETING Major:
  • A student completing a major in Marketing is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration, Cooperative Education, or Marketing.
    • A student is not eligible to complete Cooperative Education emphasis requirements of other majors.
  • Students pursuing two or more Business majors requiring completion of an emphasis must select a separate emphasis area for each major, mindful of any emphasis restrictions.
MARKETING Minor:
  • ​A student completing a minor in Marketing is not eligible to earn a major in Business Administration or Organizational Leadership and Development.
  • A student completing a minor in Marketing is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration.
ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT Major:
  • A student completing a major in Organizational Leadership and Development is eligible to earn a major in Accounting or Business Administration by completing an emphasis for each major (one for business and one for organizational leadership and development). 
  • A student completing a major in Organizational Leadership and Development is not eligible to earn a minor in Business Administration, Cooperative Education, or Marketing.
    • A student is not eligible to complete Cooperative Education emphasis requirements of other majors.
  • Students pursuing two or more Business majors requiring completion of an emphasis must select a separate emphasis area for each major, mindful of any emphasis restrictions.
